Of Mice and Men
I had great ambitions of finishing my log cabin this long weekend. I'm still shooting for it, but read here for a tale of the best laid plans. But don't give up on me. I'm still working on it!

another LC
Realized that as I wait to get a better photo.. it's just not happening. So here is my first log cabin.. I started out walking two blocks to my favorite place to take pictures.. and have such a great neighborhood.. that as I stopped to talk to folks.. the sun faded a bit too much. ;)
But here it is anyway...
After such fast success.. I even started a second LC...
The first one was a grand total of eight days !
This one was about two weeks.. till I petered out, ;)
Unfortunately the final ring of logs is on hold as I start something new..the Cathedral Rose Window no less. hahaha..
I'm like that ya know. :D
Hope your all having a great holiday !
edit to add:
Mrs. Wade.. I see your adding to our patterns ..

I Finished My Log Cabin
I'm sorry I haven't posted progress pics of my log cabin, but I made it so quickly that I didn't have time. Here is the finished 'ghan:
I finished it in just under 6 weeks. I started on Nov. 15th and I finished it last night, Dec. 23rd. Log cabin fever, indeed! I am very pleased with the way it turned out. I will be giving it away later this week. I will definitely make another one eventually. Right now, I am going to take a few days off from crocheting and rediscover my knitting!

Here's my progress
It's kind of a "choose whatever looks good and has enough left to complete the six rows" kind of thing. I'm not sure how I feel about the red, white, and blue on the one edge. I guess we'll see what happens as I add some more. I don't know. What do you guys think? Be honest. Should I frog the red, white, and blue?
Oh, and pay no attention to the munchkin hand and foot. She sees a camera and turns on the smile wattage!

Update on my progress
The inevitable
Hey guys. Just a question before we come upon the inevitable. Since we're a log cabin blog, and nowhere on the blog does it say that we only include crocheters and knitters, how would you like to handle it when we eventually get a quilter asking to join us?
I'll post a poll and everyone can weigh in. I don't have a preference one way or the other. I just wanted to address the issue before it addressed us.

Just in case you were wondering...
I still have not found the blasted knitting needle that the kids disappeared.
I'm beginning to suspect that the only way to bring it back will be to buy another pair. Then I trust it will appear immediately. Isn't that the way it works? :D
Might be Someone telling me to stick to crochet, too. ROFL. Hey, you never know...

Log Cabin it
Well, progress on the log cabin has been halted for a few reasons. Yarn shortage being one of them. Requests for my skills on PAID projects being the other. I've been asked to make several scarves. And business could branch out from here. Anyone got any serious experience with successfully selling stuff on etsy? Deb, I know you do.

My Log Cabin Waits Patiently
I'm just itching to work on my neglected little Loggy. It sits in a corner, two salad bowls full of delightful bright skeins of leftover cotton glace...as soon as I send out a swap package on Monday, my crochet hook swings back into action...
Kids one, me zero.
My log cabin? No longer on the needle. And the needle? Nowhere to be found.
*sigh*
*sigh*
Poor planning on my part
Well, I've made lots of progress on my log cabin. I'd say it's about 30% done. However, one thing I didn't plan on when starting it is causing a problem.
When I began the afghan I was using scrap yarn. After the initial center rectangle (that's right, mine is rectangular instead of square), I'd been doing 6 rows of each color. I love the blocks of color and it's looking great.
Here's where the problem comes in. It's big enough now, about 24" x 20", that it takes a good chunk of yarn to finish those 6 rows. I don't have a lot of leftover yarn that has that much left on it. The log cabin might have to take a back seat until I can finish some more projects (leaving me some more extra yarn) or until I can get to the store to pick some out. And if I buy a bunch at the store, I run the risk of it being all matchy matchy.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Tonight's the night
I am going to get some real work done on my log cabin tonight. I can't wait to see what comes off the hook!
Box log cabin start
I haven't started on the one I showed here, but I did start on another I sketched out. Based on a modified log cabin Bento Box quilt, this one will be for one of my daughters for Christmas. Here is 1 large block (4 small blocks) completed and the pattern I drew up. I am joining with a needle and yarn using each color in that section so there will be no visible lines to distract from the box pattern that forms from the logs.

A whole lotta not progress
You guys, my weekend just got away from me. Even though I had three days off I didn't manage even a stitch on the log cabin. I was contracted by someone at work to make him two scarves for $20. Plus he bought the materials. I've been trying to get the energy to finish the second of the two. It's almost done. I promise, I won't be this miserable as a host forever.
Plus, we're looking into replacing our camera in the next few days. Pictures people! PICTURES!

New Member Here!
I just wanted to introduce myself and thank you all for letting me join in. My name is Priscilla, and I blog over at By Hook or Needles. For some reason, this week I totally succumbed to Log Cabin Fever! Even though I haven't finished my ripple afghan or started my granny square afghan, I just couldn't resist starting a log cabin. Here's what I have so far:
A friend at work has recently been diagnosed with MS, so I am hopefully going to finish this up fairly quickly and give it to her. I can't make her well, but maybe I can make her feel better. I'm using Caron Simply Soft with a J hook, and I am loosely following a pattern from the Aug/Sept 2006 issue of Crochet Today. I'll keep you posted on my progress!

I actually made some progress.
I have no pictures yet, though.
I just had to be publicly proud of myself for picking up stitches.
It's the small victories...LOL.

Frogging
Ribbit. Ribbit. I think I'm going to be frogging mine too. I not only didn't love the color combination I had going, but I don't think I care for the sc either. Strange how I haven't learned from anyone else's posts. Maybe I'll try the half double, or maybe just stick with my standard double. It's all RHSS or the equivalent. Is anyone else doing random color choices or do you all have certain colors you're sticking with?

Well, looks like I'll be starting over again...ugh...
Seems that I forgot to do the variegated in a bigger hook and those stitches are smaller in it because the yarn itself (yes, same brand) is smaller than the solid colors. Why? I don't get it. lol
SO! That said...I'll be starting mine over (for the 3rd time) and should have a wonderful ghan once I do. I'm hoping to get it started again this weekend.
Any pics from anyone?? I'd love to see the beginnings of your ghans!!

*waves hello*
I just got started and I'm excited! I've been thinking about doing a crocheted log cabin for a while and this was just the inspiration I needed! I'm also a brand new knitter, and so I decided to knit it instead. By the time I'm done it should be second nature, I'd think. :-) I have a ton of stashed RHSS that needs to be worked up and this seemed like a good use for it, too. Darn yarn diet. LOL. I'm just making it up as I go along, following the basic recipe from Mason-Dixon Knitting.
Anyway, first pictures after I've had a chance to take some. Just wanted to drop in and say hello and thanks for having me!

I started my LC ghan a few nights ago...
I started out doing dc til I got to the 3rd piece. When I went down the sides of the existing two pieces, it looked 'holey'. So, I ripped the whole thing out and started again using hdc on it and I LOVE it! So much better. I want to get more done this weekend and then I'll take a pic on Sunday night and share with you all. I am going to love making this and it will be using up the WW yarn that I have extra hanging around.
Hugs! Nancy :0)

I finally started mine
Well, I finished the hubby's ripple last night and started my log cabin. I'm just using up scrap yarn, so I don't really know what I think of it yet. I'm not following a pattern, just taking it as it comes.
I could really use some help on a special project. If you would all be willing to take a look at my blog http://squintsquad.blogspot.com and look at the post titled "Looking for help" I'd really appreciate it. I'd like to make a very special toy for my daughter and could use some opinions/help/advice. Thanks in advance.

Modern Zig Zag - log cabin idea
As a graphic artist, I design/sketch almost everything on my computer before starting on it. I like the precision it gives and the ability to really see what it should look like beforehand. This is my idea for a sort of modern zig zag log cabin. I knit, crochet and quilt, so this would work with any of those methods, although I plan to crochet it. To help visualize the finished afghan, I created a color palette that is pretty close to the actual yarn color of my chosen yarn, the Vanna's Choice yarns from Lion Brand. While not normally a fan of all acrylic yarns, this new one is really nice to work with. It seems a tad heavier weight than worsted (although it is listed as worsted) and using an I hook and hdc (half-double crochet) it makes great log cabins! This will probably be my next WIP (after I finish the 3 I have going on right now!) Feel free to use this if you like, I'd love to see it!
Oh, and yes, there aren't any written directions here - I just make one block how I like and do all the rest the same way. My guess on this is I will do the first starting block (which is black) as 10 hdc wide by 7 rows high. Each subsequent stripe would then also be 7 rows high. For the black border, while I could work it in the round once the center section was completed and seamed, I think I will stitch them as individual blocks and seam as well, to continue the true "quilt" look.
Have fun!

A Question of Stitch
Hi Log Cabin-ers! I'm going to repost this pic from my blog with a question for all of you:
This particular Log Cabin is done in single crochet with a size F needle. The stitch is tight, and as a result the drape is rather stiff, but it shows the colors (Rowan Cotton Glace) to great effect. I tried another swatch in half double crochet, and achieved much better drape, but the open stitches don't do justice to the colors. What do you think? Worse drape, better colors, or better drape and compromised colors? It's a real puzzle.
I'm making up my pattern as I go, based on the principles in the Mason Dixon Knitting book for a knit log cabin. I really do believe you can wing it.

Buttons
Button
I think we need a button. (Or at least that's what I think it's called.) Anyone know how to do that kind of stuff? Oh and anyone willing to give me lessons on how to include a link in the middle of a post without using the big, long link? I'm clueless!
Hi!
I have 2 more skeins and I will be done with my first log cabin. I would post pics but my computer is down so I'm running off of my future hubbys computer.
I'm using bernat chunky in soft toupe, new denim heather and twilight twists.
I'll be sure to post pics when I'm done!

Do I need my hand slapped?
My loving (and long-suffering) hubby has brought it to my attention that I am the administrator of this blog and have yet to start my log cabin. Is this a bad thing? Can I be forgiven?

I've got the fever
Welcome everyone. I know it doesn't look like much right now, but I promise, this is going to be great. The layout is a work in progress, so if you have something you'd like to suggest, let me know and we'll see what we can work out. Post all of your log cabin-ness here. Whether it's crochet or knit. Thanks for checking it out.
